Yulia Tymoshenko: dialogue has been initiative and compromise is possible (photos)

____.jpgPresidential candidate and leader of the Batkivshchyna Party Yulia Tymoshenko considers the start of negotiations with the people that have seized the building of the Donetsk Oblast State Administration a positive step.

"I felt it was my duty to come to Donetsk today and try to negotiate with the groups of people that have been blocking the building of the Donetsk oblast administration. I was able to meet with two groups. After our talks, I can say that compromise is possible," Yulia Tymoshenko said today during a live feed from Donetsk on the First National TV Channel.

The presidential candidate said the seizure of government buildings is a form of protest again the unwillingness of the Ukrainian government to listen to the problems of the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine.

"The first complaint I heard was that a lot of time was lost, as well as complaints that for a whole month politicians and the authorities in Kyiv didn’t start negotiations with the people sitting today in the oblast state administration of the Donetsk oblast. For many years, at least the last 15 years, politicians simply didn’t hear their citizens, politicians simply ignored what was building up in the hearts, souls and mind of Ukrainians in the east and the west," she said.

The leader of Batkivshchyna said negotiations revolved around potential solutions to the current crisis. "We discussed all the issues related to the economic and social situation. Life is very hard for people now. This also needs to be understood. We also had a chance to consider ways to give local councils and regions more independence, and how to resolve all our cultural and language issues that are being raised today. I think dialogue has been initiated. This is very important," she said.

Yulia Tymoshenko said that as a result of the negotiations in the Donetsk oblast state administration, the parties agreed on the need for a broad dialogue in the format of a roundtable.

"I offered to organize a big roundtable in Donetsk right after the holidays, where all of Ukraine will be represented. For the first time, all the groups blocking government buildings in the east will be able to sit down at a roundtable with representatives of the intelligentsia, prominent figures from western and central Ukraine, and politicians from all factions to listen, understand and finally start working in the interests of the people," the leader of Batkivshchyna said.

Yulia Tymoshenko said negotiations will continue until all disputed issues are resolved. "We agreed that in a day we will meet in the evening and continue our dialogue until we see a solution that suits everyone," she added.

During a live broadcast from Donetsk on channel Ukraina, Yulia Tymoshenko stressed that politicians need to talk with the people. "There is this illusion that everything can be resolved in parliament or the Cabinet of Ministers. This is a serious mistake that comes back as revolutions, blocked buildings, and instability that leads to our country’s financial and economic decline. Therefore, the priority is to speak with people, not politicians. And when compromise with people is found, then politicians should take all the necessary decisions. Otherwise it won’t work," she said.

"After visiting the Donetsk oblast state administration, I understood that there need to be two two paths. First, fulfill the Geneva agreements. And we hope that Russia will do this. On the other hand, we need to hold direct, honest and open dialogue with the people in the east and south of Ukraine that feel that the revolution that took place didn’t leave them with a sense of justice, security and equality," Yulia Tymoshenko said.
